8 AAP workers arrested for objectionable posters in Ahmedabad; 4 booked in Rajkot

Ahmedabad: The city police arrested eight members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday, for allegedly displaying posters with the text “Modi Hatao Desh Bachao” in different parts of the city.

According to the city crime branch’s release, the posters were placed in areas like Isanpur, Maninagar, Vatva, Narol, and Vadaj. The arrests were made after FIRs were registered in various police stations earlier in the day. The arrested AAP workers were identified as Natwar Thakor, Jatin Patel, Kuldeep Bhatt, Bipin Sharma, Ajay Chauhan, Arvind Chauhan, Jivan Maheshwari, and Paresh Tulsiani.

The police statement also stated that the accused have been charged under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act for putting up objectionable posters at AMC kiosks and other public places.

The AAP’s Gujarat branch criticized the arrests, stating that it demonstrates how democracy is threatened. “Ahmedabad is the only city where people are deprived of their Constitutional rights because police can arrest you anytime and book you as per their whims and fancies. This police action proves that our apprehension that democracy is in danger is not misplaced and we were not wrong in carrying out that poster drive,” said Sagar Rabari, the Gujarat vice president of AAP.

Similarly in Rajkot, police also detained four AAP workers who allegedly posted the same kind of posters. The accused who were booked were identified as Chirag Goswami, Kamlesh Chauhan, Prashant Gadhvi, and Hitesh Meghji. DeshGujarat
