Police nabs CGST officer and accomplices for conducting fake raid for money

Surat: Police on Friday detained Surat CGST Division Superintendent Rakesh Sharma, the department’s contracted driver Kailash, and his friend Raj for conducting a fake unauthorised GST raid at a Chaniyacholi trader’s shop in Surat’s old Bombay Market.

The GST officer, identified as Rakesh Sharma, along with his two private men, raided a shop named Dheeraj Fashion and issued fake returns. They were successful in showing a difference of Rs 80 lakh in GST and then demanded Rs 40 lakh from the trader. Eventually, they settled for Rs 12 lakh before fleeing the scene.

The victim trader later contacted his Chartered Accountant (CA), who pointed out that his GST book was clear as per the norms and no GST officer can come and demand money like this.

Upon learning about the scam, the trader filed a police complaint, which led to the detention of Rakesh Sharma by the Varachha Police. DeshGujarat
