Ahmedabad: 56 Gujaratis who were stranded in violence-ridden Sudan have returned safely to Gujarat on a special evacuation flight – IAF C17 from Jeddah to Mumbai – under ‘Operation Kaveri’ launched by the Indian Government.

The central government, along with the air force and army, initiated ‘Operation Kaveri’ to rescue Indians who were stuck in the civil war in Sudan. State government officials received the 56 Gujaratis in Mumbai, and out of them, 44 were transported to Ahmedabad from Mumbai via Volvo bus, while the remaining 12 made their own arrangements.

Upon arrival in Ahmedabad, the state government facilitated the travel of 39 individuals from Rajkot, 9 from Gandhinagar, 3 from Anand, and 5 from Vadodara to their respective hometowns. A control room has been established at the Ahmedabad district collector’s office to assist Indians who are stuck in Sudan, and its contact number is 079-27560511.

“Under ‘Operation Kaveri’, a total of 56 Gujaratis out of 246 Indians, including individuals from 18 states such as Bihar, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, were evacuated from Sudan and brought to Mumbai by an Indian Air Force (IAF) plane from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, a conflict between a paramilitary group and the national army in Sudan has resulted in an estimated death toll of approximately 400 individuals. DeshGujarat
