Surat sextortion case accused transferred money to Pakistani man as Cryptocurrency

Surat: Three men who were arrested for attempting to extort money from a female professor, leading to her suicide, have transferred the money to an individual in Pakistan, said the police.

The Surat police stated that the accused converted the money into USDT, a cryptocurrency, before making the transfer. The incident occurred on April 16 when the professor from Veer Narmad South Gujarat University ended her life by jumping in front of a train. Investigation revealed that a blackmailing gang had been threatening her with the circulation of morphed photos in order to extort money.

Three members of the gang were arrested earlier this month in Jamui and Patna districts of Bihar, while two men and a woman remain at large. The gang targeted victims from different parts of Gujarat, as well as Arunachal Pradesh and Maharashtra. The accused had about 70 UPI IDs on their mobile phones. The police custody of the accused has been extended until May 20. It was discovered that the arrested individuals after deducting their share, purchased USDT from the Binance cryptocurrency exchange and transferred it to a Gmail ID associated with a person named Mian Zulfikar.

Further investigation revealed that the email ID was operated from an IP address registered in Lahore, Pakistan. The release also mentioned that a Pakistani phone number stored in one of the accused’s mobile phones was linked to this email ID. DeshGujarat
