Fake CBI officer nabbed in Gujarat after cheating people in multiple states

Ahmedabad: The city’s crime branch nabbed a fake CBI officer on Wednesday in the Rakhial area of the city. The individual, identified as Sultan Khan, 44, hailing from Sendhwa in Barwani, Madhya Pradesh, is wanted in connection with over 30 cheating cases across eight states.

The city crime branch discovered Khan in possession of a police uniform, a CBI identity card, and a P-cap. During initial interrogation, it was revealed that Khan had been impersonating Rajesh Mishra, a special CBI officer from CBI headquarters, and had defrauded people in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.

Khan and his five accomplices would target people near police stations to create an air of authenticity. Explaining their modus operandi, a police officer stated that Khan and his aides would search the belongings of unsuspecting individuals under the pretext of security measures, while secretly stealing their valuables. Khan, who has a Class 10 education, is proficient in English, Marathi, Punjabi, and other regional languages. He and his gang have been involved in fraudulent activities since 2010.

In another scheme, Khan’s accomplices would target women with jewellery and take them to him. Khan would convince them to place their jewellery in a handkerchief for protection. While distracting them, he would discreetly exchange the jewellery with other items and return the handkerchief.

The crime branch has charged Khan with impersonating a public servant and initiated an investigation. He will be handed over to authorities in other states where legal cases have been filed against him. DeshGujarat
