Mare nurtures Nilgai calf as her own in Jamnagar

Jamnagar: A strange incident has occurred in Jamnagar, in which the calf of a Nilgai (Rozdu) grew up drinking a mare’s milk and now considers the mare to be its mother, living with her. Typically, horses are animals that other animals do not approach, and horses also do not allow other animals near them. However, this case of a Nilgai calf has amazed even wildlife lovers.

The mares were raised in the Suryaraj farmhouse at Nava Nagana village, on the outskirts of Jamnagar city. During this time, a Nilgai calf, separated from its mother at a young age, began living with the mare and started drinking her milk while after had given birth. Surprisingly, the mare did not protest and raised the calf as her own. Over time, instead of returning to the forest, the Nilgai offspring stayed with the mare and ate the same food as her.

During the day, it roamed the fields, and at night, it would sleep with the mare in the stable. Wildlife lovers have been shocked by this strange incident because Nilgai is a forest animal, and such coexistence is unusual. It is also surprising that another mare cares for Nilgai’s offspring as her own.

“This is a unique case for us,” says Dhaval Rawal, a wildlife lover from Jamnagar. “This baby Nilgai was separated from its mother. The forest department rescued it and handed it over to us. Usually, we raise such offspring and release them into the wild. However, this animal started considering the mare at our farm as its mother and was unwilling to leave her, which surprised us too.”

Animal lovers and wildlife enthusiasts believe that no animal can resist the scent of a mare, keeping them away and even preventing horses from approaching. However, it is astonishing that a mare adopted a Nilgai calf in this manner. DeshGujarat
