Gujarat incurs GST loss of Rs 9,729 crore due to fake billings in last 6 years
July 01, 2023
Gandhinagar: As the Goods and service tax (GST) completes six years, Gujarat has experienced fake billing activities totalling Rs 70,672 crore since the implementation of the indirect tax.
These bogus bill scams have resulted in significant tax evasion and losses to the government. According to the department, these fake billing scams have led to a loss of Rs 9,729.18 crore to the government since the introduction of GST. However, the department has managed to recover only 5% of this amount, approximately Rs 500 crore. The state goods and services tax (SGST) department is concerned about the constantly changing methods used by fraudsters, making it difficult to trace and recover the evaded taxes.
Efforts are being made to use business intelligence tools and cancel suspicious GST identification numbers (GSTINs) to combat the problem. The government plans to implement biometric verification for issuing GSTINs, and collaborations with technology companies are being explored to detect fraudulent transactions. DeshGujarat
