Asiatic lions expected to reach Ahmedabad by 2030, with 3 currently residing in Botad

Ahmedabad: A recent development suggests that the presence of Asiatic lions here in Ahmedabad may occur earlier than anticipated. According to a vision document from last year, it was projected that lions would reach Ahmedabad in 25 years, but now it is expected to happen by 2030.

Currently, three lions, including a lioness and two cubs, have established their territory in Botad district, located about 150 km away from Ahmedabad. Another male lion has claimed a permanent territory near Velavadar, just 1 km from Ahmedabad district. These four lions are now only 50 km away from the borders of Ahmedabad.

The forest department predicts that by 2030, Ahmedabad district will become a habitat for lions as the population continues to increase. Sightings of additional male lions in the area indicate that they will soon establish their territories, leading to the formation of a complete lion pride. In Vallabhipur taluka near Velavadar, a subadult lion frequently moves between Amreli, Babra, and Velavadar, and is expected to pair up with a lioness, potentially establishing a satellite population away from Sasan.

Efforts are being made to educate and sensitize villagers on cohabitation with lions, and no conflicts have been reported thus far. The overall lion population in the state has been steadily increasing, reaching 674 in 2020 from 411 in 2010. Lions have also been observed in coastal areas and other parts of the state, indicating their successful expansion. DeshGujarat
