Sudden surge in conjunctivitis cases

Surat: The city has witnessed a sudden surge in conjunctivitis cases over the past three days.

The New Civil Hospital in Surat has reported a total of 963 cases of conjunctivitis, with 362 cases recorded on July 10th, 281 cases on July 11th, and 320 cases on July 12th. Private hospitals and SMIMER (Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research) have also observed an increase in the number of conjunctivitis cases.

Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva—the thin, clear tissue that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid. It can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, irritants, or underlying health conditions.

To prevent conjunctivitis, it is important to follow good hygiene practices:

1. Wash your hands frequently, especially before touching your eyes.

2. Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes.

3. Avoid close contact with individuals who have conjunctivitis.

4. Do not share personal items like towels, pillowcases, or eye makeup.

5. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.

For remedies and relief from conjunctivitis, consider the following:

1. Apply a clean, warm compress to the affected eye(s) to soothe discomfort.

2. Use over-the-counter artificial tears or lubricating eye drops to relieve dryness and irritation.

3. Avoid wearing contact lenses until your symptoms subside.

4. If necessary, your healthcare provider may prescribe antibiotic or antiviral eye drops for bacterial or viral conjunctivitis.

5. Cleanse the eyes gently with a clean cotton ball or pad soaked in warm water to remove any discharge.

6. Avoid eye makeup during the infection and discard any potentially contaminated makeup products.

7. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and complete the full course of prescribed medication.

It’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, as the management of conjunctivitis may vary depending on the underlying cause. DeshGujarat
