Markets in Sanand observe strike against double increase in civic taxes

Sanand: The local traders of Sanand are observing one-day strike today against double increase in taxes levied by local municipality.

The locals, a day ago marched to municipality office, protesting against 200 percent increase in taxes. The locals presented a memoramdum to a local Mamlatdar.

On the other hand, the municipality office bearers have told them that the local body lacks fund and under the burden of high-debt and therefore tax has been increased to allow basic services going on.

The locals however argue that performance of local municipality is not upto the mark and therefore they are not ready to pay more tax. They argue that services need to offer in efficient manner if local body wants to levy higher tax. The locals also opined that if at all there’s increase in tax, it should be gradual and not double at single stroke. Locals claimed that Rs. 1,000 water tax for commercial units has incresed to Rs. 10,000.

Sanand municipality is presently ruled by an Administrator. DeshGujarat
