Amreli Vision Loss Incident: Compensation for victims announced
July 26, 2023
Amreli: Gujarat’s Health Minister, Rushikesh Patel, has announced compensation for victims of a severe bacterial infection post-surgery at Amreli’s Shantabaa General Hospital that happened 8 months ago.
Patients who suffered from temporary and permanent loss of vision due to Pseudomonas Aeruginosa infections during cataract surgery will receive compensation of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, respectively.
The hospital’s ophthalmology operation theatres (OTs) were closed for investigation from November 16 to 23, 2022, after 12 patients reported severe after-effects. An expert committee report on the incident was allegedly concealed, indicating significant infection control issues at the hospital. The NHRC’s intervention came after the government failed to respond to multiple requests for reports. The compensation announcement followed the submission of the report to the NHRC. DeshGujarat
