World Lion Day: Gujarat CM launches mobile app for real-time tracking of lions

Gandhinagar: To commemorate World Lion Day, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel unveiled a new mobile application that will enable the state’s forest department to monitor lion movements. The app, named ‘Sinh Suchna,’ was officially launched in Gandhinagar. This innovative tool allows the general public to share information about lion sightings in their areas, thereby aiding the authorities in promptly responding to situations and mitigating human-animal conflicts.

During the event, CM Patel stated that the ‘Sinh Suchna’ app empowers individuals to directly communicate lion movements to the state forest department, facilitating real-time tracking and conflict reduction. Moreover, a new lion safari park is planned for establishment on the eastern side of the Gir forest, near Naliya-Mandvi village in Una taluka of Gir-Somnath district. This initiative aims to alleviate the pressure on the Gir National Park in Sasan-Gir due to tourist influx.

Other than the App, CM also launched a Lion Anthem and two books “the king of the jungle – The Asiatic Lions of Gir” and “Hu Gujarat no Sinh”.

The lion population in the state has grown to 674, covering an area of 30,000 square kilometres. Approximately 800,000 tourists visited Gir last year. CM Patel also highlighted the central government’s dedication to lion conservation through ‘Project Lion,’ which has been allocated a budget of Rs 2,900 crore. This initiative encompasses the establishment of a breeding centre, an isolation facility, and enhanced medical treatment for lions. The allocated funds will also be utilized for deploying advanced technology such as CCTV cameras, radio collars, and drones. DeshGujarat
