Jamnagar: The Gujarat police have arrested a man for allegedly impersonating an official from the chief minister’s office (CMO) and demanding the release of an accused arrested in a cybercrime case.
The man, identified as Nikunj Patel, was arrested from Ahmedabad on Saturday and brought to Jamnagar, where the cybercrime accused is being held.
Patel allegedly made a WhatsApp call on the official number of Jamnagar Superintendent of Police Premsukh Delu on August 10 and identified himself as a CMO official. He then demanded that the cybercrime accused be released, saying that he had been falsely implicated in the case.
Delu was suspicious of Patel’s identity and contacted the CMO office to verify it. The CMO office confirmed that Patel was not an official and that he had been impersonating a CMO official.
Patel was then arrested by the Jamnagar police and charged with impersonation, forgery, and criminal intimidation. He is currently in police custody.
