Ahmedabad: Gujarat witnessed one of the highest numbers of dog bite incidents reported among all the States across the nation in the previous year. The state ranked fifth in India, with 1,69,261 recorded dog bites, averaging 464 attacks per day and 19 bites per hour. This information was provided by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Prof. Satya Pal Singh Baghel, in response to a question posed by Lok Sabha members during the last monsoon session of Parliament.
The number of dog bite incidents however exhibited a declining pattern over the years, as per the data. The figures dropped from 4.31 lakh in 2020 to 1.92 lakh in 2021 and further decreased to 1.69 lakh in 2022.
It is also noteworthy that even though the state’s overall number of dog bite cases decreased, Ahmedabad presented a contrasting picture. Official figures from the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) indicated over 58,000 dog bite incidents in 2022, surpassing the 51,000 cases recorded in 2021 by approximately 7,500 cases.
