SRFDCL rethinks on personal boat docking; Joint Committee to explore river transport

Sabarmati: The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL) in the June this year had issued an Expression of Interest (EOI), inviting residents of the city to moor their personal boats and yachts along the river in exchange for a fee. The caveat was that there would be a strict prohibition on accommodating passengers.

By June 27, five private companies promptly presented their proposals. However, SRFDCL officials are now reconsidering their decision. A senior SRFDCL official disclosed, “Officials are exploring a new, innovative offering – that of introducing river transport services.” He continued, “The waterway may soon become a hub of activity, not just from private boats and yachts but from organized river transport systems that have the potential to revolutionize transportation in the city.”

The only condition for docking private boats on the river was that, in the event of rising water levels during the monsoon season, boat owners would need to temporarily relocate their vessels.

“The proposals from the five companies are currently under review and discussion,” the official added. Recently, a fee-based kayaking service was introduced at the riverfront with a special docking facility near Sardar Bridge.

During a meeting held on October 18, SRFDCL decided to establish a joint committee, headed by its managing director and executive director. “The committee will explore alternative concepts and innovative approaches to river transportation,” the senior SRFDCL official further explained.
