GU launches project ‘DVIKAR’ to validate traditional Indian practices with science

Ahmedabad: Gujarat University (GU) has launched a new initiative named the Department for Validation of Indic Knowledge through Advanced Research (DVIKAR), the first of its kind in India. The project aims to scientifically validate traditional Indian practices, leveraging a multidisciplinary approach that involves experts in science, Indic knowledge, marketing, and more.

GU Vice Chancellor Dr. Neerja Gupta emphasized that DVIKAR is not only focused on research but also seeks to transform these ancient practices into viable business ideas within GU’s startup ecosystem.

The brainchild of Prof Rakesh Rawal at GU, DVIKAR serves as a laboratory for collaboration between experts from various fields. Their objective is to scientifically validate India’s rich heritage of indigenous practices using latest technology and research methodologies. The goal is to take these practices beyond their current acceptance among specific communities and devotees, offering scientific proof to promote them globally.

DVIKAR’s inaugural projects concentrate on scientifically substantiating common rituals and practices rooted in Indian knowledge. Notable aspects include exploring the air-purifying effects of Havan (Yagna), traditionally considered a spiritual ritual. Another focus is pranayama, an ancient breathing practice integral to yoga, studied for potential benefits in respiratory health, stress reduction, and mental well-being.

Additionally, the department will investigate Kundalini Yoga’s effects on mental clarity, stress management, and neuroendocrine health. The research team, consisting of experts from India and abroad, aims to quantify these effects, potentially paving the way for integrative therapeutic practices. DeshGujarat
