4-year-old lion dead after being hit by goods train in rural Amreli

Amreli: With the increase in the population of Asiatic lions in Gir, concerns about their safety have also heightened. There have been several instances of lions coming into contact with trains on railway tracks. Today, another such incident occurred where a 4-year-old lion was fatally struck by a goods train.

The train was traveling from Surendranagar to Pipavav port when it hit a four-year-old lion near Amrutvel village in Savarkundla early this morning. Upon learning of the incident, the forest department team reached the spot, took possession of the lion’s body, and initiated further investigation.

After being hit, the lion moved to a neighboring field, where it eventually succumbed to its injuries. The forest department estimates that the goods train’s speed was around 50 km per hour during the accident.

In response, Junagadh Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Aradhana Sahu stated “an accident occurred in the nearby area while our staff was on patrol. When lion tracks are nearby, we inform the railway department and request reduction in speed, and same was done yesterday.”

A few days ago, a lion was injured in another incident involving a goods train near the railway station near Vijapadi village in Savarkundla. The injured lion is currently undergoing treatment at Junagadh Sakkarbaugh Zoo. DeshGujarat
