Demolition drive against illegal encroachment over 17 bigha land in Gir Somnath

Gir Somnath: A mega demolition drive was carried out today behind Somnath Mandir to clear out illegal encroachments on around 17 bighas of land. The drive was prompted by numerous complaints over the years about encroachments on land belonging to the Shree Somnath Trust and the state government, near Somnath Temple.

The operation targeted 21 houses and 153 huts, which were demolished during the mega drive, reclaiming a total of 17 bighas (6.79 acres) of government land.

The drive commenced early in the morning in the presence of five ‘mamlatdars’ and around 100 revenue officials, accompanied by a robust police presence to ensure a peaceful execution.

Collector Harji Vadhvaniya stated that unauthorized residential encroachments are being removed following the circular issued by the revenue department, and the area will be secured by fencing.

A meeting with the encroachers was conducted on January 25 to explain the entire process, and the administration arranged tractors and laborers for the relocation of their belongings. Provisions for food packets were also made.

Two Deputy Superintendents of Police (DYSPs) and seven Police Inspectors (PIs), Special Operations Group (SOG), Local Crime Branch (LCB), and Police GRD, along with two SRP (State Reserve Police) companies and 500 police personnel, have been deployed to ensure a smooth demolition process.
