Former Ahmedabad Mayor Dr. Mukul Shah passes away

Ahmedabad: Former Mayor of Ahmedabad, Dr. Mukul Shah passed away today due to a heart attack. He was 74. His last rites shall be performed at crematorium of Vadilal Sarabhai hospital in Paldi. According to city BJP chief Amitbhai Shah, Dr. Shah’s funeral procession shall leave his residence Sabena apartment near M.J. Library post 9 am on Monday.

Dr. Shah was Mayor of Ahmedabad during 1992-1993. He was later also appointed as the Pro Vice Chancellor of the Gujarat University during 2012 to 2014. He was also appointed as the director of Forensic Science Univeristy in 2017. He was lastly appointed as Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University in Amarkantak.

Prime Minister Modi also shared his condolence on the demise of Dr. Shah and said, “Saddened by the death of Dr. Mukul Shah. He will always be remembered for his contributions to the development of the city and his efforts towards quality education as the Mayor of Ahmedabad. Dr. Shah was MBBS, DGO and MD in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He in the past served as professor and head of the department in GCS medical college, Registrar and Professor in NHL medical college in Ahmedabad, as an inspector by Medical Council of India for the inspection of medical colleges in many states of India.

Dr. Shah was elected as municipal councilor in 1980 and again elected in 1987. During the tenure of 12 years as municipal councilor, he was the youngest to hold top three posts of Amdavad Municipal Corporation (Mayor in 1991-92, Deputy Mayor in 1988-89 and Standing Committee Chairman in 1990).
