Rajkot: Just a few weeks after the Mandal Cataract Surgery incident, another similar incident has come to light at Rajkot Civil Hospital, where a patient reportedly lost his vision after undergoing cataract surgery at the largest hospital in Saurashtra. Furthermore, the family members of the patient have accused the doctor of offering Rs 25,000 for shifting the patient to Ahmedabad. The family has released an audio clip as evidence.
The patient, Mansur Makwana, reported that he underwent cataract surgery at Civil Hospital. After necessary procedures, including the administration of drops, he was taken to the operation theatre. There, a doctor mentioned that something went wrong during the operation. The operation, which typically takes about 15 minutes, lasted around one and a half hours. Later, he was instructed to rest with a bandage over his eyes and given medication for pain.
When, even on the next day, the vision was not clear, the family members of the patient questioned the doctor about it, who provided vague answers. Eventually, they were informed that another surgery in Ahmedabad was necessary. As it was not feasible for the patient or his family to travel to Ahmedabad, they demanded that his vision be restored, and the necessary treatment be provided locally. After this, the family was allegedly offered Rs. 25,000 to transfer the patient to Ahmedabad.
According to the victim’s daughter, Shilpaben Miyatra, after her father lost his vision, the doctor called her for a separate meeting. During this meeting, the doctor admitted to making a mistake and suggested that further treatment in Ahmedabad was required. He offered Rs 1,000 for this purpose. Subsequently, this offer was reiterated over the phone, and the doctor acknowledged an error in the operation. The family then demanded immediate action against those responsible and insisted on necessary treatment for the patient.
Civil Superintendent Dr. Radheshyam Trivedi commented on the matter, stating that a complication occurred during the cataract operation. He discussed the issue with the head of the eye department and determined that it was necessary to transfer the patient to Ahmedabad to address the complication. On the matter of the doctor offering Rs 25 thousand, an inquiry committee will be established to conduct a neutral investigation. If anyone is found responsible, strict action will be taken against them, the Superintendent added. DeshGujarat
