SMC constructs 32.56 km road using plastic waste

Surat: To tackle the menace of plastic, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has constructed 32.56 km of roads using plastic waste under a pilot project in recent years, utilizing 158 metric tonnes of shredded plastic waste.

The plastic roads, claimed to be stronger than asphalt roads, require 10 tonnes of plastic waste for the construction of 1 km. If this project proves successful, the municipality plans to create additional plastic roads in the future.

In the budget for 2024-25, this initiative is being taken forward, and 4.5 km of roads will be made from plastic waste, using 50 metric tonnes of plastic waste, said Shalini Agarwal, SMC Commissioner.

Additionally, the SMC is producing 20 metric tons of plastic pallets from waste plastic for use in various plastic products. DeshGujarat
