Gujarat govt, Ahmedabad Police get HC notice in custodial death case
February 10, 2024
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court on Friday issued a notice to the city police and the state government in a case related to an alleged custodial death at Navrangpura police station. Justice HD Suthar issued the notice.
Amisha Panchal, through her advocate Harsh Yadav, filed a petition claiming that her husband, Dipal Panchal, was subjected to mental and physical torture by the Navrangpura police, leading him to ingest a substance resembling acid and succumb to the pressure.
Dipal Panchal was arrested on January 1 in connection with a cheating case, and despite being in good health during the arrest, he became unwell the next day while in police custody. He was taken to the Civil Hospital for treatment but passed away on January 4. The post-mortem indicated the presence of a substance resembling acids in his body. Amisha expressed concerns about her husband suffering abuse and raised the possibility of him ingesting the substance while in police custody or being coerced into consuming it by the police and others involved.
