Ahmedabad: The Local Crime Branch apprehended two individuals on Monday for stealing mobile phones. The arrested men, namely Avinash Mahato (19) and Shyam Kurmi (26), were allegedly paid a monthly salary of Rs 25,000 to carry out thefts. The police seized a total of 58 mobile phones, estimated to be worth Rs 20.60 lakh.
According to the police, these two individuals were recruited by Avinash’s older brother, Pintoo Mahato, and one Rahul Mahato, to steal phones that were later sent to Nepal and Bangladesh. The duo, originally laborers from Jharkhand, underwent a 45-day training period and operated in pairs, creating distractions in crowded places to snatch phones. If caught, the accomplices would flee the scene.
The accused admitted to committing thefts in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, Anand, and Rajkot. The police have registered 19 complaints for mobile thefts in these areas. The arrested individuals claimed to have been provided accommodation near the Surat railway station. DeshGujarat
