In all likelihood, Congress will have no Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat after June 2026
February 15, 2024
Gandhinagar: Come June 2026, the main opposition Congress party will not have any Rajya Sabha members from Gujarat.
There are three Rajya Sabha members of Congress from Gujarat at present. They were elected due to the strength of the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in the previous term of the State assembly(2017-2022). Post 2022 election, the Congress has so less MLAs in the State assembly, that it can not elect any member to the Rajya Sabha.
Two of the Rajya Sabha MPs of Congress from Gujarat are retiring in April’s first week. They are Amiben Yagnik and Naran Rathwa. Congress has no number in the State Assembly to replace or renew them. Both seats will be taken over by BJP.
After April first week, Congress will be left with only one Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat. He is Shaktisinh Gohil, the State Congress chief. His term will end in the latter part of June 2026. Due to a lack of numbers, again, the vacant seat will be occupied by a BJP candidate. Thus it is certain that Congress will have no Rajya Sabha representation from Gujarat after that. The year 2028 regular elections of State assembly in Gujarat may then decide whether Congress will be able to elect a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat or not.
It’s worth noting here that for the last two terms, Congress has no Lok Sabha MP elected from Gujarat. If that happens again this year in the General Elections of Lok Sabha, Congress will have no representation in parliament from Gujarat. Gujarat has 26 Lok Sabha seats and 11 Rajya Sabha seats. General elections of Lok Sabha are going to take place in April/May this year. DeshGujarat
