Gujarat govt mulls exploring Lithium potential in Rann of Kutch

Kutch: The Gujarat government is considering the idea of conducting an initial assessment of lithium potential in the Rann of Kutch area and identifying areas for systematic exploration. This initiative aligns with India’s increased focus on raw material security, aiming for 50 percent non-fossil capacity by 2030.

Piyush Shah, director (technical) at Gujarat Mineral Research and Development Society (GMRDS), told a news portal, “We will commence with a trial study to gather preliminary data, and if the outcomes are promising, we will present the project to NMET.” The GMRDS provides technical assistance for mineral administration to Gujarat’s Commissioner of Geology and Mining.

It is learnt that Gujarat’s Commissioner of Geology & Mining (CGM) had pointed out that Rann of Kachchh presents favourable conditions for brine-related lithium deposits, with sediment samples indicating significant lithium potential in surface or subsurface brines formed under arid conditions.

The Technical-cum-Cost Committee of the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) has recommended that the Gujarat CGM develop a detailed project report (DPR) and standard guidelines to implement this project.

A growing demand for lithium, fueled by the transition to renewable energy, especially for electric vehicles and various rechargeable battery products, is prompting governments to secure a larger share of lithium resources. DeshGujarat
