Ahmedabad: In the wake of recent accidents involving buses run by the civic body, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) decided on Wednesday to lower the speed limit for AMTS buses from 50 km/h to 40 km/h.
AMC and AMTS officials have instructed private bus operators to adopt the new 40 km/h limit within 10 to 15 days.
This decision comes after multiple instances of reckless driving. On April 19, an AMTS bus crushed a scooter rider near Bhulabhai Crossroads, an incident caught on CCTV and widely shared on social media. Additionally, a video surfaced on April 25 showing a BRTS driver watching a cricket match on his phone while driving. Recently, on May 12, an AMTS bus on the Hatkeshwar-Ghuma route 151/3 hit and dragged vehicles in a chain accident at the Star Bazar signal, injuring three people in a car.
After this tragic accident at Bhulabhai Park Crossroad, video of which has since gone viral, the driver of Route no. 13/1 bus of the Amdavad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) has been removed from service and is currently in police custody. While these three incidents went viral, AMTS buses have been involved in 7,283 accidents, resulting in 171 deaths over the last 10 years.
On the other hand, BRTS officials are also likely to announce the speed limit reduction after convening a meeting shortly. DeshGujarat
