Indian Army flags off Motorcycle Expedition to remember Kargil heroes
June 12, 2024
Dwarka: Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Kargil victory and in tribute to the valour and sacrifices of the heroes of the Kargil War, the Indian Army and the Regiment of Artillery are undertaking a motorcycle expedition. The Regiment of Artillery played a pivotal role in the success of Operation Vijay, and this expedition serves to highlight their significant contributions and honor the legacy of our brave soldiers.
On June 12, 2024, three teams of eight motorcycles each embarked on this journey from the corners of the country: Dinjan in Assam, Dwarka in Gujarat, and Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu. These riders are traversing diverse terrains, weather conditions, and challenging routes, symbolizing the unity and resilience of our armed forces. The three teams will converge concurrently in Delhi to ride to Dras via two separate northern arteries, Srinagar and Manali. The ride will finally reach its destination at Gun Hill in Dras, a place etched in history by the sheer valor of gunners during the Kargil War.
“The Western segment was flagged off by Lt Gen (Retd) Mahipat Sinhji, PVSM, and Brig Yogendra Chaudhary, Commander 11 Artillery Brigade, at sunset point from the city of Dwarka. Devbhumi Dwarka, believed to be the first capital of Gujarat and renowned for its ancient temples and spiritual significance, served as a fitting starting point for this journey. As the motorcycles roared to life, a jubilant crowd, including Kargil war veterans and ex-servicemen, cheered them on, adding to the patriotic fervor. The expedition will traverse towards Dhrangadhra, spreading a message of national pride and resilience across the route. Flag-in and flag-off ceremonies at all staging locations are being marked by the presence of senior officials and distinguished guests who will honor the riders and the cause they represent,” the Indian Army said in a statement.
In addition to the motorcycle journey, the expedition featured the felicitation of Kargil Veer Matas and Naris (war widows) and war veterans, recognizing their sacrifices and unwavering support. Senior Indian Army veterans were also honored, acknowledging their contributions and ensuring that their legacy is passed on to future generations.
The Delta 5 Motorcycle Expedition aims to showcase the crucial role played by the gunners during the Kargil War. The artillery’s precision, firepower, and strategic support were instrumental in turning the tide in favor of the Indian forces. This expedition not only commemorates the victory but also educates the public about the significant contributions of the Regiment of Artillery.
50 students from multiple education institutes, NCC cadets, the local populace, and civil administration also joined the riding team as a mark of reverence and solemn tribute to the battle heroes. DeshGujarat
