Rajkot police file murder case in alleged police torture death of 70-year-old

Rajkot: Acting on the directive of the Gujarat High Court, the Kuvadva Police has filed a murder case in relation to the death of 70-year-old Amrishbhai Sitapara, after his family approached the court alleging that death was due to police torture.

Amrishbhai Sitapara, aged 70 and residing on Morbi Road in Rajkot, worked as a security guard at Raj Security. On April 12th, after leaving for work, he was found unconscious near Thakkar Wadi, close to Gauridad village. Upon receiving the news, his family rushed to the scene and admitted him to the civil hospital via ambulance service 108. During this time, Amrishbhai informed his family members that he had sustained severe injuries and had been assaulted. He subsequently lost consciousness and passed away on April 18th after six days of treatment.

A report of the incident was filed at the police station located at the civil hospital. However, the police did not investigate the circumstances leading to Amrishbhai’s death. His son, Anand, alleged that his father was assaulted by the police after being picked up by a PCR van. Despite written and oral reports to the police, no proper investigation was conducted, prompting the family to approach the High Court for justice.

The High Court instructed the police to register the complaint in the matter. Failure to do so would require the police to provide written reasons for not registering it. If dissatisfied, the applicant could appeal to the local court. Now, the Kuvadva police has filed a murder case against an unknown individual. DeshGujarat
