Lion Deaths by Trains: Gujarat HC issues show-cause notice to Railway, Forest dept
August 10, 2024
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court on Friday issued show-cause notices to the state forest and railway authorities, questioning why action should not be taken against them for failing to adhere to the court’s directions.
The authorities did not follow the guidelines established by a committee aimed at preventing Asiatic lions from being run over by trains in and around the Gir Sanctuary.
The bench, comprising Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi, demanded an explanation from the authorities after amicus curiae in the suo motu PIL, advocate Dharmesh Devnani, presented a report detailing two recent incidents where lions were killed in accidents involving a passenger train near Amreli.
