Congress to hold meet for selecting a new leader of opposition in AMC

Ahmedabad: The main opposition Congress party will conduct the process to elect the new leader of the opposition in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on September 10 at a meeting held at the State party headquarters. The Congress party is currently divided into two groups of municipal corporators, and there is disagreement over who should be appointed as the leader of the opposition for the remainder of the current five-year term in the AMC.

A meeting of corporators, attended by Congress leaders, will be held at 2:30 p.m. During this meeting, the opinions of corporators will be gathered. If a single name emerges as a consensus choice by the end of the meeting, that person will be declared the leader of the opposition immediately. If multiple names are proposed, a vote will be conducted, and the candidate with the highest number of votes will be appointed as the leader of the opposition.

The Congress party holds 23 seats in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled AMC, with most of these corporators representing areas with significant Muslim populations. In the event of an election between two candidates, one will need to secure at least 12 votes to be elected as the leader of the opposition. Currently, Shehzadkhan Pathan serves as the leader of the opposition.
