Why is Gujarat Police trending on X (Twitter)?

Surat: On social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), the Gujarat Police is trending due to the quick and prompt action taken following a stone-pelting incident at the Ganesh pandal in the Sayedpura area of the city. People are sharing videos of the police’s actions and commending their efforts as they carried out combing operations and arrested the accused who tried to breach the peace.

On Sunday night, six Muslims pelted stones at the Ganesh statue ‘Variavi Cha Raja’ in the Sayedpura area of Surat, prompting hundreds of locals to gather at the Sayedpura Police Chowki, demanding action against the accused. All six suspects, including four minors, were arrested, and the police launched a combing operation along with a prompt investigation.

Following the stone-pelting, a clash broke out at the location, forcing the police to resort to lathi charge, and around ten tear gas shells were fired to disperse the crowd. Approximately 1,000 police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain peace, and during the combing operation that continued through the night, the Surat police teams arrested 27 individuals who had encouraged the stone-pelting incident.

Around 2:30 AM, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi and local BJP MLA Kanti Balar visited the site and engaged with residents to help ease tensions in the area. Sanghavi reported that six minors, suspected of throwing stones at the Ganesh pandal, were taken into custody by the police. Additionally, 27 others were arrested for allegedly inciting the stone-throwing incident.

Harsh Sanghavi stated, “In the Sayedpura area of Surat, today, six people pelted stones at the Ganesh Pandal. All six were arrested within minutes by the police, and 27 others who encouraged these individuals have also been arrested. The combing operation continued through the night, and at 3:30 AM, the operation is still ongoing. The Surat city police have made a vow that all those who pelted stones and encouraged it will be nabbed before sunrise. The investigation is underway, and police are deployed throughout Surat. Action will be taken against those who breach the peace.”

Sanghavi, along with the Surat Police team and Ganesh Mandal organizers, performed Ganeshji Aarti and Puja at the same Ganesh Pandal where the stone-pelting occurred.

Later, in a tweet this morning, the Minister of State said, “As I promised, we have caught the stone-pelters before sunrise! 6:30 am #Surat Update Here are the details: ⁃27 stone-pelters arrested ⁃CCTV, video visuals, drone visuals, and other technical surveillance work is still ongoing. ⁃Strict action will be taken against all accused. ⁃Our teams have worked whole night & yet to identify the stone-pelters and bring them to justice.”
