Over 14 lakh houses built in Gujarat under PM Awas Yojana in 9 years

Gandhinagar: “My house was made of mud, and during the rainy season, water would leak through the roof. My family and I lived in constant fear that it might collapse at any moment. I was always concerned about our safety. However, after my house was approved under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, I received a Pucca house with a proper roof and essential amenities. Now, my family and I are truly happy,” says Kiranben Rathod, a resident of Khadat village in Mansa taluka, Gandhinagar, who received her home under PMAY (Rural).

Lakhs of people like Kiranben across the country have found the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to be a blessing. The Government of India launched Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) in 2015 to provide housing for economically weaker sections and uplift their living standards.

Following this, in 2016-17, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural) was introduced to offer Pucca homes (permanent homes) to the homeless in rural areas. In Gujarat, the scheme has been successfully implemented. To date, a total of 14.25 lakh houses have been completed across the state, with over 8.68 lakh in urban areas and more than 5.57 lakh in rural regions. Over 64% of the houses constructed in the state are owned or co-owned by women. It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Gujarat next week, where he will once again present the gift of housing to the people of the state.

The aim of PMAY (Urban) is to provide affordable housing with essential amenities to poor and middle-class families in urban areas. Against the set target of 7.64 lakh houses for Gujarat, over 9.78 lakh houses have been sanctioned under PMAY (Urban). Of these, over 5 lakh 40 thousand houses have been approved in the name of women or under joint ownership. Out of these approved houses, construction of over 8.68 lakhs has been completed.

Gujarat leads the nation in providing interest subsidies on home loans for first-time buyers under the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) component of PMAY (Urban), benefiting more than 6 lakh people.

Additionally, under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan announced by the Government of India in 2020, the Affordable Rental Housing Complexes (ARHCs) scheme was introduced to provide low-cost rental housing to urban poor and workers. Within just three months of the announcement, Gujarat became the first state in the country to convert 393 houses in the SUDA area of Surat city into rental housing under Model-01.

For the Global Housing Technology-India’s Lighthouse Project, the central government selected six states, including Gujarat’s Rajkot. Under this project, a total of 1,144 houses of the EWS-2 category, with 39.77 square meters of carpet area, have been constructed using monolithic concrete construction technology.

In the past year alone, more than 1,31,000 houses have been constructed under this initiative, significantly improving the quality of life for rural communities.

Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural), 3.77 lakh (63%) houses have been sanctioned in the name of women or under joint ownership, reflecting Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s commitment to women’s empowerment. Additionally, around 3.22 lakh houses (60%) have been allocated to beneficiaries from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
