NHAI likely to hand over SG Road to Amdavad Municipal Corporation

Ahmedabad: The management and possession of the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar Highway (SG Road) may be handed over from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to the city civic body. The decision was made after meetings held between the state government, NHAI, and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

It is understood that NHAI has agreed to transfer this highway after the completion of the ongoing upgrade project and the construction of two new flyovers. Additionally, NHAI is conducting maintenance work on the road.

According to news report, an AMC official stated, “In 2017, we discussed the issue of damaged roads in the city, including the service road. Meetings were held among officials from NHAI, AMC, and the roads and buildings department, with the consensus that since SG Road runs through the city, its maintenance responsibilities should be transferred to AMC. However, no decision was made.”

However, after previous unsuccessful attempts, the decision to hand over the highway to AMC gained momentum following a serious car accident involving Tathya Patel on Iskcon Bridge. Residents frequently lodge complaints with the AMC regarding potholes, road damage, and malfunctioning streetlights on SG Road. DeshGujarat
