Mehsana: In a tragic incident during the Gujarat State Boxing Championships, Karan Pipaliya, a 19-year-old boxer from Surat, was declared brain dead after sustaining a head injury in a bout in Mehsana.
During a match held at the Sardar Patel Sports Complex in Panchot, Karan faced Harshvardhan Rathore in the 63.5 kg weight category. According to reports, Harshvardhan had a clear advantage over Karan in the initial two rounds. Later, he landed a punch to Karan’s head. Despite this, the fight continued for a few seconds before the referee stopped the match, declaring Karan unfit to continue. The referee counted Karan out, canceled the bout, and declared Harshvardhan the winner. Following this, both boxers removed their gloves. Suddenly, Karan collapsed and lost consciousness in the boxing ring.
The medical staff present attended to him, and he was transferred to a private hospital in Mehsana, where he underwent emergency surgery due to suspected brain hemorrhage. However, as his condition continued to deteriorate, he was transferred to SIMS Hospital in Surat on Sunday evening.
The doctor at SIMS Hospital stated that Karan was already brain dead when he arrived in Surat and had been placed on life support. Despite his brain-dead state, his family remains hopeful for his recovery, the doctor added.
Talking about the incident, Rita Pipaliya, Karan’s mother, stated that he was injured at 2:30 PM but wasn’t taken to the hospital until 4:30 PM. She also alleged that the hospital took too long with the formalities.
Karan’s father, Bharat, also alleged that there were around 150 participants in the tournament but inadequate medical services. He stated that Karan was taken to the hospital in a private car and noted that if an ambulance had been available, his son could have received timely treatment. Bharat urged the organizers to make proper arrangements so that what happened to his child does not happen to anyone else. DeshGujarat
