Govt plans makeover of SG Highway to alleviate congestion
September 28, 2024
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government has laid out a plan for the transformation of SG Highway, which connects Ahmedabad with the state capital. This highway stretches from Ujala Junction in Sarkhej to J-7 Circle in Gandhinagar,
According to a report, a team led by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will oversee the development of service roads and buffer zones along both sides of SG Road in coordination with NHAI, the Roads and Buildings Department, Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC), Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA), and Gandhinagar Urban Development Authority (GUDA).
“The initial phase includes a sample stretch from Iskcon Junction to Pakwan Junction, covering 1.3 km, for which the tender has been approved. The estimated cost is ₹25 crore,” stated a senior official from the Urban Development Department. This development is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion while enhancing the aesthetic and functional quality of SG Road, aiming to establish it as a model roadway.
In 2017, the Roads and Buildings Department initiated upgrades along SG Road from Nana Chiloda to Sarkhej. Four flyovers have been completed at a cost of ₹1,000 crore, and two more are under construction—from Karnavati Club to YMCA Club and from Gota flyover to Vaishnodevi junction. Upon completion of these projects, the road will be handed over to AMC, with NHAI officials already having approved the plan. DeshGujarat
