Gujarat FM Kanu Desai to lead state’s delegation at COP29

Gandhinagar: State Finance and Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai will lead Gujarat’s delegation at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22. An official release on Sunday stated that Desai will be joined by S. J. Haider, Additional Chief Secretary of the Energy and Petrochemicals Department, and Jai Prakash Shivahare, Managing Director of GUVNL.

The conference will focus on implementing the loss and damage fund for vulnerable communities and advancing key elements of the Paris Agreement, particularly Article 6, which pertains to carbon market mechanisms. Other priorities include strengthening Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and setting climate finance targets beyond 2025, according to the statement.

The event, chaired by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev, will bring together nearly 200 countries, along with a broad spectrum of global leaders, negotiators, youth representatives, and civil society participants, to further global climate goals. Each day of COP29 will address critical climate action themes, including finance, energy transition, human capital, biodiversity, food security, and digitalisation, the statement added. DeshGujarat
