Gujarat govt to notify 9 new municipal corporations this month: Report

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has initiated the process of notifying nine new municipal corporations from existing municipalities within the next fortnight, according to a newspaper report citing sources in the urban development department.

This move was previously announced in the 2024-25 state budget. The municipalities set to gain municipal corporation status are Gandhidham, Surendranagar, Porbandar, Vapi, Navsari, Mehsana, Morbi, Nadiad, and Anand, bringing the total number of municipal corporations in Gujarat to 17.

The report also states that, in addition to these nine municipalities, three more towns may be upgraded to municipal corporation status in the coming months.

The administrative procedures, including the appointment of new officials, are nearing completion. All existing municipalities slated for conversion will be dissolved, with government-appointed administrators overseeing operations until elections are held. District collectors will be appointed as interim administrators for the newly designated municipal corporations.

It is also learned that elections for these corporations are anticipated to be held in late 2025, alongside other municipal elections. DeshGujarat
