January 08, 2025
Surat: A few months after a similar incident at the Gondal Marketing Yard, a large quantity of banned Chinese garlic has been seized from Surat. A total of 2,150 kg of the banned garlic was seized and destroyed on site. The confiscated garlic was valued at around Rs. 10 lakh.
Chinese garlic, known for its inferior quality but low price, has been banned in India to protect local farmers from financial harm. Today, the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) staff noticed garlic being offered for sale and became suspicious. After inspection, the goods were confirmed to be Chinese garlic. The garlic, valued at around ₹10 lakh, was seized, confiscated, and destroyed on site.
The prices of garlic in the local vegetable market have skyrocketed, with prices ranging between ₹400 to ₹500 per kg, leading some people to attempt to sell the banned garlic. DeshGujarat
