Gujarat Transport Dept issues 15-day ultimatum to Uber over bike taxi
January 09, 2025
Ahmedabad: The Transport Department has given Uber a 15-day ultimatum to stop using private two-wheelers with white number plates as bike taxis. It is learned that if the company fails to comply, it will result in the cancellation of its license.
This action follows a similar one against Rapido after the RTO found that Rapido was providing taxi services despite being registered only for rickshaw services. As a result, Rapido’s license was suspended for a month.
In this case, according to the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2020, private vehicles with white number plates cannot operate as taxis. Complaints from auto-rickshaw associations prompted an investigation, which confirmed that Uber was using non-aggregator vehicles for bike taxi services. Despite multiple notices, the company failed to take corrective action or provide an adequate explanation, prompting the Transport Department to issue a final warning to ensure compliance.
