Ahmedabad: A 27-year-old Bangladeshi man, identified as Riyaz Abul Sheikh, has been detained by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of city police for allegedly forging Indian identity documents and entering the country illegally. Riyaz, originally from Suktogram in Kalia district, Bangladesh, was arrested on January 15 during a routine SOG patrol. He had been residing in Vivekananda Nagar, Ahmedabad, under a false identity.
Riyaz confessed to crossing the India-Bangladesh border illegally a year ago with the assistance of an accomplice, Anik Das. He admitted to obtaining fake Aadhaar and PAN cards to assume the identity of an Indian citizen. During the arrest, the SOG recovered a forged Aadhaar card, a fake PAN card, two bank ATM cards, and a digital copy of his Bangladeshi national ID from his mobile phone. Riyaz disclosed that he had been deported in 2019 for similar offenses but managed to re-enter India unlawfully in 2020.
The SOG has registered a case under the IPC, Passport Act, and Foreigners Act. Riyaz’s mobile phone and documents have been seized for forensic analysis, and efforts are ongoing to trace his accomplice and other members of the forgery network. The accused has been presented in court, and further investigations are underway. DeshGujarat
