Former CJI Gogoi advocates for UCC, calling it progressive and important for national unity

Surat: Former Chief Justice of India and Rajya Sabha member Ranjan Gogoi described the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as a “progressive piece of legislation” and emphasized that it is an “important step towards national integration.” However, he urged the government to build consensus before moving forward with its implementation.

Speaking at the Surat Litfest 2025 during a session on “Challenges for the Judiciary,” Gogoi explained, “The UCC is a progressive law that will replace various customary practices embedded in the legal system.” He further stated, “It is crucial for national unity and does not conflict with Articles 25 and 26 of the Constitution, which pertain to the right to religion. The UCC will address matters such as adoption, marriage, divorce, and inheritance, and it has been successful in Goa.”

Gogoi emphasized the need for consensus-building and vigilance against misinformation, as these are key to unifying the nation. He pointed out that India’s diversity in customs and practices has resulted in multiple laws governing civil and personal matters, which impact social justice. “A country cannot afford to have so many laws,” he added.

He advised the government and parliamentarians not to rush the process but to ensure the public understands what the UCC entails. “Some may pretend not to understand, but we must look to the future,” he remarked. DeshGujarat
