January 29, 2025
Ahmedabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday apprehended Virendra Patel at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in the city. The fugitive, a former director of Charotar Nagrik Sahakari Bank in Anand, was allegedly involved in a Rs 77 crore financial fraud and had been on the run for two decades.
According to the CBI, Patel was extradited from America via Interpol and taken into custody upon arriving at Ahmedabad airport. He allegedly orchestrated the Rs 77 crore fraud with co-conspirators, after which a case was filed against him at Anand Town Police Station in 2002. He faced multiple charges, including criminal breach of trust, forgery, cheating, and conspiracy.
It is noteworthy that the CBI obtained a red corner notice against Patel in 2004, enabling global agencies to track him. However, the accused managed to evade arrest for 22 years.
Patel has been handed over to Gujarat Police for further legal proceedings. DeshGujarat
