SMS Multi-Speciality Hospital in Ahmedabad in soup over alleged misuse of PMJAY after patient death
January 29, 2025
Ahmedabad: The family of a temple priest from Vadnagar taluka has filed a complaint against a private hospital in the Chandkheda area of the city, alleging that the hospital’s negligence led to his death. Kishorgiri Goswami, the priest of the Brahmani Mataji Temple in Jaska village, had sought treatment at SMS Multi-Specialist Hospital for a toe ailment.
According to the family, doctors at the hospital initially diagnosed a nerve compression and recommended surgery. The family consented, but they claim the hospital never disclosed the details of the procedure, the surgeon involved, or the specific nature of the surgery performed.
Following the surgery, Goswami was discharged the very next day, which the family found suspicious. They allege that the hospital then presented them with a report indicating the need for a heart stent procedure, followed by a bypass surgery recommendation. The hospital reportedly charged them Rs. 3 lakh for the procedures. The family also alleges that the hospital fraudulently claimed Rs. 10 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme for the surgery.
For three months following the surgery, Goswami suffered continuous pain and was repeatedly taken back to the same Chandkheda hospital. However, the family claims the hospital staff avoided taking responsibility for his deteriorating condition. Goswami passed away on January 19th.
His wife, Kapilaben Goswami, has now filed a formal application with the Gandhinagar District Superintendent of Police and the state health minister, demanding a thorough investigation into the alleged negligence and fraudulent billing practices of SMS Multi-Specialist Hospital. The family is seeking justice and appropriate action against the hospital.
Kapilaben stated, “My husband’s stomach was cut open for a very long operation. We repeatedly asked the doctors at Chandkheda Hospital what operation was performed, but they refused to provide any answers.”
She further described the post-operative complications her husband faced, stating that the stitches became infected, leading to continuous discharge of pus from his stomach and an inability to eat for days. Despite repeated appeals to the doctors, they allegedly ignored his deteriorating condition.
Kapilaben expressed her suspicion that the surgery was performed incorrectly and said, “We suspect that the operation they performed was flawed,” “which is why my husband lost his life,” she added.
The deceased patient’s son, Rakeshgiri, stated that his father’s left little toe was turning black. For treatment of this issue, they took him to SMS Multi-Specialist Hospital in Chandkheda, Ahmedabad.
The doctors, saying they would have to perform a bypass, made a long incision in his stomach and two other cuts in the lower abdomen and performed the surgery. After the surgery, the pain in his father’s toe persisted, and his entire leg turned black. Suspecting the operation performed on the stomach, they repeatedly went to the doctor and tried to obtain information regarding who performed the surgery and what type of surgery was performed. However, they were driven away from there. His father’s health remained poor for a long time, and eventually, he lost his life. Suspecting this operation to be suspicious, they have filed an application with police, demanding a proper investigation. DeshGujarat
