Supreme Court junks plea for holding Urs at demolished Dargah in Gir Somnath

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India today rejected a plea to hold the ‘Urs’ from February 1 to February 3 at the site of a demolished dargah that was illegally built on government land in Gir Somnath.

A bench consisting of Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih considered the arguments presented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who represented Gujarat’s authorities. The authorities explained that the demolition had removed unauthorized religious structures from government land.

Mehta also stated that no activities, including Hindu religious rituals, were allowed on the land, which had been encroached upon.

The applicant’s lawyer argued that a dargah had been demolished by the authorities and that the ‘Urs’ had been traditionally held there for many years. The authorities had denied permission for the event on January 30. However, the bench emphasized that no religious events, including the ‘Urs,’ would be allowed at the site until the ongoing legal matters related to the demolition are resolved.

On January 27, the Supreme Court announced it would hear petitions, including a contempt case against Gujarat authorities for allegedly demolishing residential and religious structures in Gir Somnath without prior approval, after three weeks. DeshGujarat
