Khambhat: In a tragic incident on this morning, two labourers were buried after a bridge slab collapsed in the Hatia Khad area of Khambhat. Preliminary reports indicate that one of the labourers sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital, while search and rescue operations are underway to locate the second trapped worker.
Officials said the slab fell suddenly during construction work. Following the incident, the Mamlatdar and a team from the local police reached the site for assessment and rescue coordination.
Allegations of serious negligence have surfaced against the contractor overseeing the bridge construction, which is part of an ₹8 crore infrastructure project. Locals have accused the contractor of failing to provide basic safety equipment to the labourers, claiming that workers have been regularly seen on site without protective gear.
The fire department is assisting in the ongoing rescue operation. Meanwhile, the police have summoned the contractor and recorded his statement. Authorities stated that if the investigation confirms negligence, criminal charges will be filed against the contractor.
