Gujarat loses 250 MBBS seats as NMC cracks down on non-compliant colleges
July 22, 2025
Ahmedabad: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has slashed 250 MBBS seats across Gujarat as part of a nationwide cut impacting over 6,000 seats in nearly 750 medical colleges. This decision comes after recent large-scale inspections conducted in various states.
Among the most affected institutions, the Swaminarayan Institute of Medical Science and Research in Kalol lost all its seats due to serious non-compliance and major irregularities. Amreli Medical College saw a reduction from 200 to 150 seats, while Dr Kiran C Patel Medical College and Research Institute in Surat also lost 50 seats, bringing its total down to 150, a senior official from the state health department confirmed.
Gujarat, which earlier had 6,900 medical seats, now has 6,650. The NMC attributed the cuts to issues such as faculty shortages, poor infrastructure, misinformation, and inadequate hospital facilities. DeshGujarat
