Gandhinagar: Eight years have passed since the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. A recent report by SBI Research reveals that nearly 50% of the country’s active GST taxpayers are concentrated in just five states, highlighting a significant skew in tax registration and pointing to potential areas for improvement in other regions.
According to the report, the five states contributing the most are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Uttar Pradesh tops the list, accounting for 13.2% of all active GST taxpayers, followed by Maharashtra (12.1%), Gujarat (8.4%), Tamil Nadu (7.7%), and Karnataka (6.9%).
India currently has 1.52 crore active GST taxpayers, with one in every five being a woman. The report also notes that some economically strong states are underperforming in GST participation relative to their share in the country’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). States like Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka have a lower share of active GST taxpayers compared to their contribution to the national GDP.
