Gujarat govt to provide extra sugar, oil to BPL, Antyodaya families; over 3 crore to benefit

Gandhinagar: With the intention of ensuring that Antyodaya and BPL families in the state can celebrate Janmashtami in a better way, the Gujarat government has decided to distribute additional sugar and edible oil at concessional rates to these families. “Starting from early August, food grains will be distributed at subsidized rates to more than 3.18 crore members of over 75 lakh ration card holders across the state,” said Food and Civil Supplies Minister Kunvarjibhai Bavaliya.

Providing further details, Minister Bavaliya stated that the state government will supply quality edible oil, specifically double-filtered groundnut oil, at a concessional rate of Rs. 100 per litre per card. This benefit will be extended to families covered under the National Food Security Act (N.F.S.A.) 2013 and Non-N.F.S.A. BPL families, at a price significantly lower than market rates. In addition to the regular entitlement, an extra 1 kg of sugar will be distributed: BPL families will get 1 kg per card at a concessional rate of Rs. 22 per kg, and Antyodaya families will get 1 kg per card at Rs. 15 per kg.

Minister Bavaliya added that under the Public Distribution System and various state government schemes, over 75 lakh ration card holders — covering about 3.18 crore family members — currently receive monthly supplies of sugar, salt, gram, tur dal, and 1 litre of double-filtered groundnut oil per family. To help them celebrate the major festivals of the year, Janmashtami and Diwali, an additional 1 kg of sugar will also be provided on these occasions.

Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies, Bhikhusinhji Parmar, further announced that on the occasion of the upcoming Janmashtami festival in August 2025, each ration card holder among Antyodaya and priority families under N.F.S.A. will receive 1 kg of gram at a concessional rate of Rs. 30 per kg, and 1 kg of tur dal at Rs. 50 per kg to ensure access to protein-rich food. Additionally, 1 kg of salt per card will be distributed at a concessional rate of Rs. 1 per kg to all Antyodaya and priority families under N.F.S.A. and Non-N.F.S.A. BPL families.

Minister Parmar also noted that to ensure beneficiaries receive these items in time to celebrate Janmashtami, the allocation of food grains for August 2025 has already been made this month (July 2025). This ensures that the supplies reach fair price shops by the beginning of August. Moreover, doorstep delivery of these allocated quantities under the challan/permit process is actively underway.
