PM Narendra Modi to Visit UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy from May 15

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a multi-nation official tour from May 15 to 20, visiting the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy, with a focus on strengthening trade, investment, energy cooperation and strategic partnerships with Europe and the Gulf region.

According to an official statement, the first leg of the Prime Minister’s visit will be to the UAE on May 15, where he will hold talks with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The discussions are expected to focus on bilateral cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, along with regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The statement said both sides will also review progress under the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which is based on “strong political, cultural, economic and people-to-people links.” The visit is also expected to promote growing trade and investment ties between the two countries. The UAE currently stands as India’s third-largest trade partner and seventh-largest source of investment over the past 25 years. The welfare of the over 4.5 million Indians living in the UAE will also feature in the discussions.

In the second leg of the tour, Prime Minister Modi will visit the Netherlands from May 15 to 17 at the invitation of Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. During the visit, Modi will meet King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Jetten.

The visit is aimed at expanding cooperation in sectors including defence, innovation, semiconductors, green hydrogen and water management. The Netherlands is among India’s largest trade destinations in Europe, with bilateral trade valued at USD 27.8 billion in 2024-25, while cumulative Dutch investment in India has reached USD 55.6 billion.

Prime Minister Modi will then travel to Gothenburg, Sweden, from May 17 to 18 at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The two leaders are expected to review bilateral ties and discuss cooperation in areas such as green transition, artificial intelligence, startups, defence, climate action and emerging technologies.

The statement noted that bilateral trade between India and Sweden has reached USD 7.75 billion in 2025, while Swedish foreign direct investment into India has touched USD 2.825 billion between 2000 and 2025. Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Kristersson will also jointly address the European Round Table for Industry alongside Ursula von der Leyen.

In the fourth leg of the visit, the Prime Minister will travel to Norway from May 18 to 19 for bilateral engagements and the 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo. This will be Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Norway and the first Prime Ministerial visit from India to the Nordic nation in 43 years.

During the visit, Modi will meet King Harald V, Queen Sonja and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Discussions are expected to focus on trade and investment, clean and green technology, blue economy and implementation of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.

The official statement said Norway’s Government Pension Fund has invested close to USD 28 billion in the Indian capital market, while bilateral trade between the two countries stood at around USD 2.73 billion in 2024.

The 3rd India-Nordic Summit will be held in Oslo on May 19, where Prime Minister Modi will join the leaders of Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden. The summit will focus on technology, innovation, renewable energy, sustainability, defence, space cooperation and Arctic-related issues.

In the final leg of the tour, Prime Minister Modi will visit Italy from May 19 to 20 at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. During the visit, he will meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella and hold bilateral talks with Meloni.

The visit comes amid ongoing implementation of the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029, covering sectors such as trade, defence, clean energy, science and technology. Bilateral trade between India and Italy reached USD 16.77 billion in 2025, while cumulative Italian FDI into India stood at USD 3.66 billion.

The government said the Prime Minister’s multi-country visit is expected to “further deepen India’s partnership with Europe across sectors, particularly trade and investment ties in light of the recently concluded India-EU FTA.” DeshGujarat
