Ahmedabad firm ties up with CSMCRI Bhavnagar to make low-sodium Salicornia salt

Ahemdabad: In a significant step towards sustainable agro-tech innovation, a city-based company has signed a licensing agreement with the CSIR–Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI), Bhavnagar, to acquire process know-how for producing a low-sodium salt derived from the salt-tolerant plant Salicornia brachiata.

Under this agreement, Seashore Cultivation & Habitat LLP gains exclusive rights to use proprietary techniques and specialized scientific knowledge developed by CSIR–CSMCRI for efficient and eco-friendly production of the salt, which will be marketed under the brand name Saloni.

“This alliance is designed to harness the potential of Salicornia brachiata, a halophyte that thrives in saline environments and offers both nutritional and ecological benefits,” said Dr. Kamalesh Prasad, head of Business Development at CSIR–CSMCRI.

Saloni salt is positioned as an alternative to traditional table salt, offering significantly reduced sodium content without compromising on taste. “The partnership is expected to promote commercial cultivation and processing of Salicornia, expanding its application in health-focused diets and environmental conservation,” Dr. Prasad added.

CSIR–CSMCRI, known for its pioneering research in marine biotechnology and saline agriculture, sees this agreement as another milestone in its mission to translate cutting-edge research into scalable, real-world solutions.
